HOMEOWNER'S CHECKLIST

Hey...what can I do to help myselt at home?

Home Owners Electrical Help Check List

(Proper Care of Your Electrical System)

1.

Keep area in front of your breaker panel clear - 30 inches wide by 3 feet in front. This is an electrical code. Needed for proper accessibility to equipment.

2.

Once a year turn all the breakers to the fully off position and then back on. This keeps the breakers functioning properly. GFCI breakers should be tripped once a year in addition to being turned off and on.

3.

Keep electrical outlets clean of foreign matter, dirt - this prevents dirt getting on the contacts of the receptacles.

4.

Trip GFCI type receptacles twice a year. These receptacles are the type with the test and reset buttons. Just press test on that outlet and other outlets located in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, and the exterior. Any of these receptacles may go off with the test button on the GFCI. After test button is pushed, just push reset button again to reset. The outlet and all other outlets fed downstream will be turned back on.

NOTE: GFCI type receptacles that have tripped. These receptacles are very sensitive. Appliances plugged into a bathroom or outside receptacle may have tripped this device. This usually means the appliance has a fault in the equipment. If after you have removed the appliance, the GFCI does not reset, then your GFCI is bad. If it does reset, press the reset and check the receptacle to the on position.

5.

If exterior weather proof receptacles are not working, check for a GFCI receptacle in the garage or bathroom. Again, press the reset and check the receptacle for proper function.

6.

Whirlpool Bathtubs. These tubs also have GFCI protection. Some tubs have the GFCI installed underneath the tub. Look for your code required access panel. The GFCI is reset like your other GFCI receptacles, or you have a breaker type GFCI. This GFCI resets by turning to the full off position, then to the on position.

7.

If your circuit has gone dead or shorted out, go to your service panel and look at the directory as to the location in the panel of the circuit breaker. If it was shorted out or tripped under an overload, just make sure this breaker has been manually turned to the off position, and then turned to the on position.

8.

Blinking recessed fixtures. This happens when a recessed fixture has the wrong lamp installed for its rating. A proper lamp should always be installed for the particular trim used.

9.

1/2 switched outlets. If your home has switched receptacles, the bottom half of the receptacle will get turned on and off by the switch. The top will stay on and be hot whether the switch is being used or not.

10.

Dishwasher operation. If your dishwasher does not work, check to make sure the code required disconnect switch located up on the counter is turned on.

11.

Your smoke detectors are electric. They are interconnected so if one goes off, they all go off. Please test once every three months for proper operation

Please feel free to call Spring City Electric if you have any other electrical questions or problems.
